DRUGSTORE SKINCARE: ACNE/OILY SKIN
It's getting colder and that means our skin is most likely screaming at us to get our act together (at least mine is.) But if I am being honest with you, Ya girl is balling on a budget when it comes to skincare. I can't afford to buy a $75 dollar eye cream and $35 worth of night time pimple medicine so I have had to come up with a cheaper alternative that still will save my skin. Ever since I can remember, my mother always hounded me about skincare; did you put lotion on, wear this eye cream, Eliza! Little did I know, she was right (of course) & now I look to my mother and hope that one day that I have skin as beautiful as hers. Let me give you a little background on my skin before diving into some products that you NEED NEED NEED.
I have always had acne prone skin. Always. In middle school it got SO bad that after months of trying so many different pills and tropical ointments, we decided (as in we, I mean my mother) that Accutane was my best option. I was on Accutane for a couple months and it definitely helped my skin with the huge knockers that would never disappear. However, that doesn't mean that don't have the occasional crater, a country on my chin or breakouts on my forehead. It happens, I'm a girl.
So I have been on the constant mission to find myself the greatest drugstore, acne and kinda oily skin medicine and face washes that won't cost me an arm and leg to purchase. It is quite a tricky task but I am going to share my FAVORITES at the moment that are very affordable :)
COME DRUGSTORE SHOPPING WITH ME LETS GET RID OF THEM ZITS !!
BRANDS I TRUST! For me, it starts with the brand. I don't usually go for the no-name pimple cream or the off brand acne wash just because my skin is super sensitive. Some brands that I always go for:
- Clean and Clear
- Yes to Tomatoes
- Tea Tree Oil - I'll get into this later
I will switch off using just a basic, acne fighting cleanser that has Benzoyl Peroxide or Salicylic Acid in it and a daily cleanser with no medication. Majority of the brands above sell a gentle, daily cleanser with those ingredients in it. After I use a cleanser, depending on the day, I may use a scrub and exfoliate as well. (St. Ive's has GREAT exfoliators.)
After I wash my face, I always use Micellar Water to get the excess crap off my face that I caked on from before. Then, I always will use a toner of some sort right after the shower. Below are some of my favorite toners. If you travel often, the padded toners are amazing.
My next step, I kind of feel like a big girl with because I spent some money on this product. For about a year I have been using La Roche Posay Cream on my face (it is a little pricers but it has saved my skin!) In this step, depending on how bad my skin is that day, is when I would use the Tea Tree Oil as well. Tea Tree Oil is AMAZING for breakouts. Literally, take a tiny bit on a cotton ball and dap it on the pimple. Tea Tree Oil kills bacteria so the zit will downsize AND not spread. I linked the Tea Tree Oil that I buy below however, there are SO many different brands and stores that sell just a basic tea tree oil.
Now, with all that being said, I LOVE new products. I am that girl who could browse the target beauty section, convincing myself I need all of these products and sometimes, I buy one for the heck of it and give it a whirl. You never know unless you try! But for the most part, I will stick to some sort of variation of these products and it seems to keep my skin pretty calm and under control.
I hope this helps you (even just a little) with some of my skin must haves at the moment! Especially if you are combo skin like me:)
